Joseph S Rubio

Born September 30th, 1976
Died August 6th, 2025

Joseph Rubio, age 48, of Papillion, Nebraska, passed away unexpectedly on August 6th while rock hounding in the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands in South Dakota.

Born on September 30th, 1976 in Omaha, Nebraska, Joe was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend whose presence brightened every room he entered. He touched countless lives with his kindness, humor, and unwavering generosity.

Joe treasured his wife and family and proudly achieved many goals in life. One of his biggest accomplishments was how far he had come at his company, Mutual of Omaha. As he continued to grow and push himself to learn new things, he started as a security guard and worked hard over his almost 30 year career to be where he was in the end, a very proud Security Business Systems Analyst. He was passionate about rockhounding, he loved to travel and find beautiful rocks all over the country. In recent years he also found a great passion for the stock market and encouraged anyone who would listen to invest for their future.

Joe is survived by his wife, Shayna Monterroso; his children, Grace Rubio and Vincent Rubio; his stepchildren, Adam Monterroso and Jonah Monterroso; his parents, Monica Rubio and Robert Rubio; his siblings, Julie Hawthorne, Nick Rubio, and Elena Rubio; and his faithful dog, Ginger. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Rubio. He will also be deeply missed by nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends who were fortunate enough to know him.

A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, August 24th at Crete Carrier Riverview Lodge at Mahoney State Park, next to the observation tower, beginning at 4:00pm. Day passes will be prepaid for everyone. Friends and family are welcome to attend and share stories, memories, and reflections. We will open the floor for anyone who wishes to share at 6:00pm. If you’d rather not speak, you’re welcome to write something down to be read on your behalf. Casual Mexican dinner from Jacobo’s will be provided, one of Joe’s favorite places to get food.

In honor of Joe’s life and the impact he had, we invite you to share your thoughts, stories, and how he touched your life. Please feel free to add your memories and/or pictures to this memorial site, and/or bring them to the service so they can be read and remembered together.

His laughter, his spirit, and his love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
